How to Prepare:

Collect the following items before you begin:

  • 2 blank pieces of paper (one for a draft and one for a good copy)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Markers/crayons/coloured pencils
  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Stickers

Your goal is to use each letter of the name of a friend to begin a word or sentence that shares what you love about them, why you are thankful for them, or a special encouragement!

Step 1: Choose a friend you’d like to create an acrostic for and write out their name on a scratch piece of paper. Make sure you know the correct spelling of their name!  It’s best to write their name vertically down the side of the page.

Step 2: Beside each letter of their name, write something you love about them or an encouraging sentence. Feel free to experiment and be creative with your word choices—this version is your draft.

Example — Name: Holly
H: Helpful—You are always willing to help me with my schoolwork!
O: Open—You always share your feelings and wear your heart on your sleeve!
L: Loving—I always feel loved when I’m around you!
L: Loyal—I know that you will always have my back!
Y: Youthful—You are always willing to be silly and play fun games with me!

Step 3: Once you have a draft of your acrostic, use a fresh piece of paper to create an original piece of art for your friend!

💡Activity Hack! Consider finding the letters of their name with newspaper clippings and glueing them to your paper to write your words/sentences underneath.

You could also cut out pictures, use stickers, or create drawings that match the sentences you’ve written. Be as creative as you’d like!

Make an acrostic for your Club Leaders and friends or your caregivers at home. You will make their day!

Acrostic Complete! Congratulations!

How It Works

An acrostic is a form of poetry or word puzzle where certain letters in each line spell out a word, message, or phrase when read in sequence.

The key characteristic of an acrostic is that the first or final letters of each line, or sometimes other specific letters, create a hidden message or meaning when put together. Acrostics are often used for creative expression, puzzles, or as a poetic device to add layers of meaning.
